The Journal of Common Market Studies (JCMS), the premier EU-studies journal, has just published a 20th Anniversary Symposium on Arrival of Normative Power in Planetary Politics.

The symposium develops the ideas of the original 2002 JCMS article by introducing the arrival of normative power in planetary politics. ‘Planetary politics’ are characterised by truly planetary relations of causality that can only be understood and addressed holistically. In the context of climate emergency, Coronavirus, Russian invasion of Ukraine, the war in Gaza, and their socio-economic and political consequences, a planetary political approach to understanding the EU is essential. The symposium consists of four contributions:

  1. Ian Manners, ‘Arrival of Normative Power in Planetary Politics’.
  2. Kalypso Nicolaïdis, ‘The Third Democratic Transformation: From European to Planetary Politics’.
  3. Michelle Pace, ‘The Construction of EU Normative Power and the Middle East ‘Conflict’ … 16 Years on’.
  4. Maxine David, Roberta Guerrina, and Katharine A.M. Wright ‘Nakedly Normative: A Feminist (Re-)Imagination of Planetary Politics’.
