Doctoral studies

On these pages we introduce doctoral studies at the department, how they are structured, and how you can apply.

Doctoral degree

A doctoral degree is the highest academic degree you can achieve. A Swedish doctoral degree comprises 240 credits, which corresponds to four years of full-time study. The education includes various courses and a research project that results in a scientific thesis - the doctoral thesis. The thesis is defended in a public defence. After completing their doctoral education, many graduates pursue academic careers, while others move into roles in industry or public administration.

Importance of doctoral education

Doctoral education is a key part of the university's mission and responsibility. As a doctoral student - which is what you are called when you are a research student - you are an important part of our research environment. At the Department of Political Science, around thirty doctoral students work, and we normally admit new doctoral students once a year.
