Teaching experience and practice

I have 35 years experience of directing and leading world-class teaching and education in Britain, Denmark, and Sweden. During that time I have been director of masters' programmes in EU politics and policymaking in British and Danish universities.

My Active Learning pedagogy uses research to inform courses on the Masters in European Affairs, EU policymaking, international relations, and research methods. I teach courses on 'European Governance', ‘Europe in Global Affairs’, 'Everyday Europe: Understanding European Integration from the Ground Up', 'International Relations’, ‘Political Cinéma’, and 'Active Learning in Social Science' for faculty members. I am an advocate of the student-centred pedagogy of Active Learning. I run workshops and courses on Active Learning and incorporate its pedagogy into my teaching. I am recognised as an Excellent Teaching Practitioner by the Faculty of Social Sciences, Lund University.

Research experience and practice

I have 35 years experience of world-leading research on the European Union's politics and policymaking. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, my research was voted one of the five most important in the world and was read by the President of the European Commission. My research on European integration and European Union is amongst the most cited in the world. My article on normative power is the highest cited in the leading journal of EU politics and policymaking, the Journal of Common Market Studies.

My research currently focuses on the European Union's Normative Power in Planetary Politics, including economy (EU trade and development policies), society (EU equality and human rights policies), ecology (EU sustainable development and climate change policies), conflict (EU sustainable peace and rule of law policies), and polity (EU good governance and democracy policies). I have extensive experience of directing European Union studies research programmes in Britain and Denmark, where I was Head of the European Union research unit at the Danish Institute for International Studies.
