The article suggests the notion of a global indicator reporting trajectory that is shaped by three main elements: the politics of indicators, a reporting infrastructure, and indicator advocacy. This is illustrated through the case of indicators on multistakeholder partnerships of Sustainable Development Goal number 17. The case study points to a great risk for policy shrinking with regard to ambitions related to multistakeholder partnerships in the 2030 Agenda. This has implications for accountability and ultimately for the realization of the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals.
