Pilots for transforming the transport sector through energy efficient buildings

How can housing design make it enable for people to travel more sustainably in the city - i.e. to choose a bike, public transport and smart mobility, instead of using their car?

Working with so-called pilots is a way to create innovative and energy-efficient solutions through experimental activities or so-called urban test labs. In this project we follow pilots for bicycle houses for increased use of bicycles, as well as pilots for shared travelers through so-called integrated mobility solutions (MaaS) in Malmö, Lund and Gothenburg.

MaaS, mobility as a service, offers multiple, combined, ways to move in the city, and pay for that move, often in an app. The project is studying completed homes as well as housing that are only in the planning stage.
A central aspect of the project is social justice: access to both housing and sustainable transport solutions such as rental bikes, according to previous research, tends to be unevenly distributed in cities.

The research project aims at:

  • Increasing the knowledge of how this type of housing solutions can contribute to a reduced private car and thus reduce climate emissions and reduce resource utilization,
  • Increase our knowledge about how social justice can be included early in the planning process, and
  • provide the basis for developing instruments for socially sustainable and energy efficient housing planning that promote sustainable transport.
