The chapter deals with the increased visibility and proliferation of LGBTQ+ organisations in the Arabic-speaking world, from the Queen Boat case in 2001 until today, as well as the debates and controversies surrounding this increased visibility.
Particular attention is placed on the problem of translating words and concepts related to queer and trans identities, as well as how different strategies of translation of sexualities and sexual identifications may open up or foreclose upon certain forms of politics.
Lastly, the chapter provides an overview of some of the most well-known LGBTQ+ rights organisations and cases of queer and trans activism in Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq, Egypt and Jordan.
