The dissertation proceeds from a contemporary discussion about the need to rethink democracy and extend it beyond humans. A shortcoming in attempts in green political theory to do this is identified.
The bulk of the dissertation consists of a historical analysis with a focus on how the basic structures of thought have shaped the meaning of humans, nature, and their relation and how that relation, in turn, has shaped the conceptualisation of political order.
The analysis shows, among other things, that the modern concept of democracy presupposes a relation between humans and nature according to which they, rather than being completely separated, are different but depend on each other and form a unity.
