Karin Aggestam first woman and political scientist appointed the Pufendorf chair

Peace-building, mediation and justice issues are on the agenda for Karin Aggestam who holds the prestigious Pufendorf chair, which provides the holder the opportunity to devote most of her time to research.

– The chair is a research position but I have made sure to retain some teaching. Interaction with the students is very rewarding, says Karin Aggestam to the magazine LUM, Lund University Magazine.

The Torsten and Ragnar Söderberg Foundations’ Chair in Commemoration of Samuel Pufendorf was established in 2002 in order to promote research, primarily in law, economics and political philosophy.

Karin Aggestam is the first woman and political scientist to hold the chair. The holder should conduct research in the spirit of the Pufendorf legacy according to the Pufendorf statutes.

– Pufendorf argued that the state of nature for human beings is peace, a thesis that I have driven throughout my research career, says Karin Aggestam to LUM.

– He took on some major global challenges at the time through interdisciplinary work. I will use my time as the holder of the Pufendorf chair to launch a multidisciplinary international team on diplomacy of justice based in Lund.
