Teaching

Teaching at the undergraduate level as a doctoral student is both fun and good for one’s CV. It is primarily the department's employed teachers who teach, but it is not uncommon for needs to arise that doctoral students fill. Doctoral students are then part of teaching teams and should not have formal course responsibility themselves. Teaching may be included in the departmental duties, which may constitute a maximum of 20% of working hours.

Planning your teaching

Discuss potential teaching ideas with your supervisor first and then with the director of undergraduate studies Daniel Alfons who will inform you of available teaching options. Doctoral students are not entitled to teach, instead this depends on the needs of the department. Teaching may begin with individual seminars or lectures and become more extensive in a later step.

A teacher who wants to include a PhD student in her team shall not address the PhD student directly. Instead, they should begin by telling Daniel Alfons of their teaching needs and who they think would fit, if they have an idea of that. If this is approved the teacher shall in the next step turn to the main supervisor and ask for permission to ask the PhD student.

Supervision

Doctoral students may act as supervisors for undergraduate thesis authors, but usually not above intermediate level. It is advisable to take on supervision after having gained some initial teaching experience. If you are interested in supervising, please consult first with your supervisor and then with Daniel Alfons.

Pedagogical courses

There are a number of courses on higher education teaching and learning. The introductory one, 'Introduction to Teaching and Learning in Higher Education' (2 weeks) is mandatory for everyone that teaches at Lund University.
