Guidelines for teaching staff

Guidelines for teaching staff at the Department of Political Science

On this page you find information on responsibilities for teaching staff members, administrative procedures and systems, grades, course coordinator responsibilities (before the course starts, during the course, after course completion), and thesis supervision (Political Science).

Staff responsibilities

Teaching staff members have a responsibility to inform themselves about their teaching duties in Retendo and contact the Deputy Director of Studies (Daniel Alfons) in the event of any questions or ambiguities. Changes to the agreed teaching assignment during the calendar year need to be discussed with/approved by the Director of Studies (Rikard Bengtsson) in advance.

All staff members are expected to read the document Terms of service and remuneration rules at the Department of Political Science for information about terms of service, remuneration principles and course budgets.

Course coordinators (individually or within a teaching team) have specific obligations (see below). However, all teachers within a teaching team are responsible for the implementation of a course.

Administrative procedures

  • New syllabi and changes to syllabi are prepared together with the Director of Studies and then approved by the Department Board (or in some cases by the Faculty Board).
  • Establishment of and changes in literature lists follow special instructions:
Link to webpage "Decision on course literature"
  • Pedagogical support is coordinated by the Study Advisors (Mats Janér).
  • Re-examination of a course is to be offered between five and seven weeks after the regular examination; in addition, a make-up examination is offered during the second half of August. For the last module of a spring semester course, the August examination serves as the re-examination.

Administrative systems

  • Scheduling/booking of rooms is done in TimeEdit by the assigned administrator (Kristina Gröndahl Nilsson).
  • Canvas is used for course information and communication (but not for reporting grades, see below). Teacher access to Canvas is given by the assigned administrator (Helen Fogelin).
  • Grade reporting is done in Ladok through the assigned administrator (Helen Fogelin). All teachers need to ensure authorization to certify grades in Ladok (this is done in Lucat; if help is needed, contact Kristina Gröndahl Nilsson).

Grades

Please note that students are entitled to receive their grades within 15 working days
(20 days for courses with more than 100 students).

  • Also “Fail” grades are to be reported in Ladok.
  • An examiner may give a student the opportunity to supplement a submitted examination assignment. A supplemented assignment is graded according to the regular grading scale of the course.

Course coordinator responsibilities – before the course starts

  • Ensure that the teaching team is aware of the division of labour and responsibilities within the course.
  • Finalize a schedule for the course based on a template from the assigned administrator (Kristina Gröndahl Nilsson). The schedule, including examination dates, must be available to students no later than one month before the start of the course.
  • Update/complete the Canvas site for the course before the course starts.

Course coordinator responsibilities – during the course

  • Present the learning outcomes of the course at the introductory meeting.
  • Introduce the Canvas site at the introductory meeting.
  • Maintain contact with SI leaders (entry-level courses).
  • Contact Helen Fogelin for a list of registered students, to be used for reporting grades.
  • Conduct a course evaluation at the end of the course.

Course coordinator responsibilities – after course completion

  • Report grades within the prescribed time.
  • Report to the Deputy Director of Studies any deviations from the pre-specified distribution of teaching hours in Retendo.
  • Prepare a course report and send to the Director of Studies.

Thesis supervision (Political Science)

  • Approximately half of the assigned supervision time should be contact time with the thesis author(s).
  • At the Bachelor's level, supervision consists of a plan seminar, a mid-seminar and at least two individual supervision sessions (between the seminars and after the midseminar).
  • At the Master’s level (30 credits), the supervision format includes four group sessions (plan seminar, theory seminar, methods seminar and mid-seminar) with intermediate individual supervision sessions (as a minimum).
