Strömbom, Bramsen and Stein on how to analyze and understand agonistic principles in peace agreements

Lisa Strömbom, Isabel Bramsen and Anne Lene Stein have recently published the article "Agonistic peace agreements? Analytical tools and dilemmas" in Review of International Studies (open access).

The study develops a framework for analysis of agonistic principles in peace agreements, based on the three indicators 1) spaces for interaction, 2) forms of inclusion, and 3) the framing of the peace agreement. The indicators are developed through the use of examples from the peace accords in Colombia, Israel-Palestine and Northern Ireland.

Lastly, the article highlights four dilemmas related to integrating agonistic principles into peace accords, especially issues of power, the relatively common mix of agonistic and liberal ideals, how to understand constructive ambiguity related to agonism, and finally the challenge of implementing the principles expressed in the peace agreement.
