About the seminar

In this seminar, Akshay Mangla, Associate Professor in International Business, at Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford, will present and answer questions concerning his latest book: Making Bureaucracy Work: Norms, Education and Public Service Delivery in Rural India. New York: Cambridge University Press (2022).

Book description

In Making Bureaucracy Work, Mangla investigates why and how state agencies implement universal primary education programs (more or less) effectively in India. It advances a theoretical framework centered on informal bureaucratic norms, the unwritten rules of the game that guide the behavior of state officials and their relations with citizens and non-state agencies. The findings are based on more than two years of subnational comparative field research in four Indian states.

About Akshay Mangla

Mangla is a political scientist and Associate Professor of International Business at the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School and Research Fellow at Green Templeton College. He has faculty affiliations with the Department of Politics and International Relations and the South Asian Studies program at Oxford School of Global and Area Studies. He is also an Associate Editor of Indian Politics and Policy.

Mangla specialise in the comparative political economy of development with a focus on public institutions, education, social policy, and state-society relations in South Asia. Methodologically, he has an interest in qualitative and multi-method field research.
