Breiding’s research project explores how we can judge if the EU’s actions to support and protect LGBT rights are legitimate, when there are different opinions about this issue among politicians and citizens in different countries. To do this, the project uses a theory of democracy that values diversity and conflict as part of a healthy society. This theory is called agonism. The project, then, questions the extent to which other theories are able to judge whether the EU’s actions are legitimate or not, when there are disagreements about what kind of values and identity the EU should have. For example, some citizens and politicians may not agree with the EU’s claim that member states should respect and promote LGBT rights. In addition to the theoretical parts of the project, Breiding will conduct empirical research on how the EU responds to opposition to LGBT rights in member states to apply his theoretical claims.
