Current research

My dissertation project deals with the relationship between public finance and political development in a historical perspective. Some theories of state formation suggest that taxation can be tied to the development of representative regimes while a state collecting revenue that is independent of its population can afford to be more authoritarian. In my research I explore the political significance of such ’independent sources of revenue’ in Europe’s past. For instance, I trace the impact of plunder, copper mining and crown domains on the rise and fall of absolutism in early modern Sweden.
