Current research
Jenny Lorentzen is a Postdoctoral fellow with the Gendered Militaries project at the Department of Political Science, Lund University. In her postdoctoral research, Lorentzen focuses on gender in military reform in Mali.
Lorentzen's PhD thesis titled “Normative Encounters between the ‘Global’ and the ‘Local’: Women, Peace and Security in Mali and Rwanda” (2020), is about the processes that take place when global gender equality norms embedded in the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda are promoted in societies transitioning from war to peace.
The PhD thesis explains how norms travel between different socio-political contexts through multiple and often overlapping encounters between ‘global’ and ‘local’ norms, actors, practices, and discourses. Drawing on theories on the ‘agency of the governed’ in norms research and the ‘local turn’ in peacebuilding research, it provides a conceptual framework for studying the role of global and local actors in shaping the meanings and trajectories of norms.
