European Twin Towns

Open guest lecture by Katarzyna Stoklosa on European Twin Towns.

Within the framework of border demarcation in the 20th century, twin towns have emerged between numerous European locations. Generally, this development caused no major problems in Western Europe, as cooperation and mutual use of the various resources available in each of the towns was not out of the question, despite the towns’ division. By contrast, the same development in divided Eastern European cities mostly involved major obstacles. In the case of different political and economic problems, it was not only collaboration that was problematic to achieve, even the simple reality of close vicinity proved to be a great barrier.
