The course introduces key aspects of diplomatic practice, including negotiation and mediation. It explores and compares different forms of diplomacy, debates surrounding the transformation and potential decline of diplomacy, cultural influences on international negotiations, and the role of third parties in conflict resolution and negotiation processes.
Diplomatic practices and strategies are examined in relation to a range of actors, including states, intergovernmental organisations (IGOs), non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and both official and unofficial diplomats. Throughout the course, particular emphasis is placed on the relationship between theory and practice in international relations.
Course seminars provide an empirical foundation for the theoretical discussions and offer opportunities to apply concepts to contemporary international issues.
