In the article “Beyond Compliance: Recognition, Solidarity and Minority Rights in Post-Accession Estonia” recently published in the journal “Nationalism and Ethnic Politics”, Roxanna Sjöstedt examines the internalization of the minority rights norm, focusing on the Russian minority in Estonia after EU accession 14 years ago.
Despite that integration has occurred with relation to both materialist factors such as citizenship, and ideational aspects such as social interaction many gaps in integration remain, such as income cleavages and the maintenance of a minority culture. Sjöstedt argues that the interplay between materialist and identity structures and processes affect socialization, hindering both political and societal internalization.
