Once a lively global conversation about how to build and sustain peace, today’s discourse has been hijacked by the language of security, deterrence, and defence. As geopolitical rivalries and new technologies of warfare dominate attention, the space for imagining inclusive and sustainable peace has all but disappeared. This discussion argues that the erosion of a collective peace imaginary, mirrored in democratic backsliding and a decline in multilateralism, signals a profound crisis of what peace can mean in the 21st century.
