Jönsson on Parliaments in Global Governance

Christer Jönsson and Anders Johnsson have co-authored the article "Parliaments in Global Governance” in the journal ”Global Governance: A Review of Multilateralism and International Organizations”.

Existing research on the role of parliaments in global governance has emphasized the history, structure and formal powers of international parliamentary institutions and their efforts to forge links with other international organizations.

However, the focus on these organizations as actors in their own right needs to be complemented with increased attention to their role as facilitators of growing parliamentary involvement in world affairs.

In addition to outlining the organizational development and inter-organizational relations of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), this article highlights its role as facilitator of multifaceted parliamentary involvement in global affairs.

Agenda 2030 recognizes the importance of parliaments holding governments to account for their international commitments.
