Hildingsson and Stripple on long-term futures in urban planning

How can the long-term be considered in urban planning and experimentation? In a new article – "Planning for 1000 years: The Råängen experiment" published in the journal Urban Planning – Roger Hildingsson, Johannes Stripple and Alice Herrström have together with Peter Pelzer, Utrecht University, studied how the Church of Sweden as a landowner has taken on a new role as planner and urban developer in the Brunnshög area.

In Råängen, Lund Cathedral addresses a thousand-year time perspective and have initiated an art and architecture program for reflections and conversations about the future situation of their urban development. This is unusual, but the Råängen case illustrates how long-term futures can be fruitfully brought to the present through multiple means of imagination. A valuable insight for urban planning is how established planning practices could be complemented with trust in reflective conversations in which questions are prioritized over answers.
