Corruption in governments

Why are some governments more corrupt than others? Why do high-level officials in some countries seem to extract more rents than others?

In the recently-published article “Cabinets, Prime Ministers, and Corruption: A Comparative Analysis of Parliamentary Governments in Post-War Europe” Hanna Bäck and Jan Teorell, together with Staffan Lindberg, present one answer to such questions, focusing on the role of the Prime Minister in controlling high-level corruption.

The article analyses corruption across 26 West and East European democracies over the post-war period using a new dataset (Varieties of Democracy). The article has been published in the journal Political Studies.
