A Brief History

Political Science has been studied at Lund University since 1877. Today, Lund University’s Department of Political Science combines an ancient heritage with modern research and education. In recent years, the department has been very successful in competing for external research funding. Our research groups dedicated to central themes such as democratisation, globalisation, diplomacy, peace and conflict studies and environmental policy are at the forefront of international research. The strong research profile of the Department of Political Science is reflected in its teaching. Our courses are developed in connection to research projects, providing students with the opportunity to study current research findings with lecturers who are themselves active researchers within their respective fields. Our educational environment has long been highly internationalised: many of our courses are offered in English, every semester we welcome around 60 exchange students and we have several exchange agreements with universities in Europe, North America and Asia, allowing our students to pursue their studies abroad.

Studies at the Department of Political Science in Lund create the conditions for a successful professional career within both the public and private sectors. We train people for professional assignments which require qualified analysis and investigation, administration, leadership and information. We also offer opportunities for internships within public authorities and organisations both in Sweden and abroad. Political science graduates from Lund who have achieved leadership positions within politics, public authorities, foreign policy administration and business and industry are regularly invited to contribute to our courses and programmes, to inspire and share their experiences with current students.

The university city of Lund also offers a rich assortment of activities and opportunities beyond academic studies. The Department of Political Science is located in the area called Paradis (“Paradise”), a stone’s throw from the main University building and the cathedral in central Lund. We have plenty of study places and the University Library and a number of other departments are to be found in our immediate vicinity. A classic campus environment in a classic university town.
