Inför avresa

The time between confirmation from the department that you have been admitted to the programme and the moment you receive an information pack/confirmation from the foreign university can sometimes be long. This usually depends on the fact that the semester system in other countries is not entirely parallel to ours but also on the fact that procedures vary between countries and between universities.

Usually, the higher education institutions in other countries contact our exchange students relatively promptly, but sometimes students are contacted at times which do not fall within our semester periods; it is not unusual for the host department to get in touch with the student at first in June/July for studies in the autumn semester and in October/November for studies in the spring semester. Some universities send information and confirmation only once the exchange student has sent in his or her application documents to the university. Check what applies in your case and read more below.

NB! You must always wait for the confirmation and information package from the host university/university college abroad before you can start your studies, so make sure you get your information package in good time before the start of the semester at your host university.

To be able to get the Erasmus scholar you need to apply. The application you will find here.

Contact with the host university

As soon as you receive confirmation and information from the department, the responsibility and work for you as an exchange student is transferred to the host university.

Once you have received confirmation that you have been awarded a place on the department’s exchange programme, a preliminary enrolment on courses and application for accommodation must be made directly to the host university/institution abroad on that higher education institution’s own application documents. In certain cases, the application documents are to be sent to the higher education institution before confirmation and/or further information is sent to you from the university. Check what applies to your specific case – follow instructions and respect deadlines!

It is important that you:

* pay attention to deadlines, so that you can make the necessary notifications to the host university
* regularly check your student email for messages
* arrange for post to be forwarded.

Choosing courses

Find out what courses are on offer at the host university. You are always welcome to discuss your course choices with the study advisor or the international coordinator. When you have made your final choice, you are to send in a study plan/learning agreement to your home department for approval.

Insurance

As a registered exchange student at the Department of Political Science, you are insured through the Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency’s insurance, Student-UT. The insurance provides personal injury coverage equivalent to the coverage provided by the general student insurance in Sweden as well as travel insurance. The coverage is valid in both cases round the clock. The policy is signed by the relevant higher education institution as collective insurance. The insurance coverage provided is valid during your stay in the host country as well as during your direct travel between that country and Sweden. Read more about Student-UT insurance and its conditions on the homepage of the Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency’s website, Kammarkollegiets hemsida.

The Social Insurance Office’s European health insurance card

If you are going to undertake exchange studies with ERASMUS, you must have the Social Insurance Office’s European health insurance card with you. The health insurance card can be ordered on the Social Insurance Office’s homepage Försäkringskassans hemsida.

This card gives you the same access to healthcare within the public sector (e.g. doctors, pharmacies, hospitals and health centres) as the inhabitants of the country you are visiting. If you receive health care in a country where fees are applied, you will get compensation for the expense incurred, either immediately or as soon as you return to Sweden. The card is not valid for private sector healthcare.

Medical Insurance Card (MIC)

If you are going to undertake exchange studies outside Europe, you must apply for a Medical Insurance Card (MIC). The card is issued by your department at Lund University. Contact your study advisor for more information on the MIC.

As a student, it is your own responsibility to ensure that you obtain a European health insurance card or an MIC in good time before your departure.
